    My knee hurts after I started running.....

    Hey Guys,

    I’m Coach T, run leader and personal trainer with a handful of past injuries that have lead me to Glucosamine Sulphate and some other non-medicated aids to ease and stop progression of pain or injury relating to my knees.

    Ok, have you been getting a pain in your knee? As if it’s inside the knee and varies from a stiffness to an ache all the way up to being painful…..?

    My suggestion is that you could have a slight cartilage wear / irritation due to lack of protective fluid around the knee.

    This fluid is naturally produced within your body and an increase of sudden activity or sudden activity that your body is not used to can lead to a lack of it being produced to protect your joints.

    Also the effects of age and people with osteoarthritis suffer with a breakdown of cartilage leading it to be thinner and leading to greater friction!

    I find that persons over the age of 30 or those with an increased weight suffer quickly with knee and joint pains even more so after a sudden increase of activity but this does not rule out the younger of you getting the pain too!

    Catching this pain early can make the difference between giving up or carrying on and I truly believe it can be managed with a few simple preventatives.

    COACH T’s simple measures for knee pain & running or HIIT exercise

    I suggest the following as possible aids to stop or ease the pain during exercise and this information should not supersede any medical advice or guidance you have been given.

    1. Knee support Neoprene stabilising knee support, found in most fitness stores, supermarkets and of course online. These provide great support for your knee during suspect cartilage damage as well as providing support for possible ligament injury. I suggest wearing this during the day to provide continued support and relax at night time, I also switch to a supportive sleeve when the pain or injury eases.

    2. Glucosamine Sulphate A supplement!!!! I know yet another pill that you’re being told to take to cure your

    problems! I do very much support and advise this supplement, it has helped me for many years and I believe I would not be running without it.

    How does it work? Glucosamine sulphate is a chemical found in the human body. It is used by the body to produce a variety of other chemicals that are involved in building tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and the thick fluid that surrounds joints.

    Joints are cushioned by the fluid and cartilage that surround them. In some people with osteoarthritis, the cartilage breaks down and becomes thin. This results in more joint friction, pain, and stiffness. Researchers think that taking glucosamine supplements may either increase the cartilage and fluid surrounding joints or help prevent breakdown of these substances, or maybe both.

    Some researchers think the "sulphate" part of glucosamine sulphate is also important. Sulphate is needed by the body to produce cartilage. This is one reason why researchers believe that glucosamine sulphate might work better than other forms of glucosamine such as glucosamine hydrochloride or N-acetyl glucosamine. These other forms do not contain sulphate.
